Error Analysis of Written English Essays: The Case of 3rd Year Students of English Major, Chiang Mai Rajabhat University

This research has the objectives as 1) to analyze errors in students' essay writing and 2) to analyze causes of errors in students' essay writing. It is mixed between qualitative and quantitative research. The population and the sample group selected by purposive sampling were 27 third year students enrolled in Essay Writing course (ENG 3212) in the first semester of the academic year 2021. The research instrument was the essay writing test based on the topic “My Favorite Place,” with a writing length limit of 350-400 words, over 2 hours. No tools or reference textbooks are allowed during the test. The research data was collected by 27 pieces of students’ writing paper examined to find writing errors which can be classified into 25 types. The statistics used in the research is percentage. The researchers analyzed all errors of each type found in the test into percentage to find the most frequent error types in descending order.
The research results were found that:
1. The five most common errors in descending order were sentence fragment 18.44%, punctuation 13.5%, article 12.08%, verb tenses 10.49%, and word choice 8.59% respectively.
2. The analysis of students’ essay writing errors revealed that most of the errors were due to the influence of mother tongue transferred to the target language. Students still do not understand the differences in grammar rules, basic sentence structures and complex sentences. As a result, it is impossible to write complete sentences, use
punctuation and articles. The results of such errors in writing English can be used as a guideline for teaching writing skills for English language teachers.
