Abstract

This study aimed to: 1) examine the current conditions of the implementation of prevention and intervention for student dropout in schools within the Khon Kaen city cluster; 2) develop teachers’ skills in such operations; and 3) evaluate the outcomes of the skill development. The research employed an action research approach conducted in two cycles. The target group consisted of 15 teachers responsible for the student support system from five schools. The research instruments included questionnaires, interviews, knowledge tests, skill assessment forms, observation forms, supervision records, and study visit reports. Quantitative data were analyzed using percentage, mean, and standard deviation, and compared before and after the development, while qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis.
The findings revealed that:
1. Current conditions: Schools had implemented certain measures for preventing and addressing student dropout; however, clear operational guidelines and systematic supervision were lacking, resulting in limited effectiveness.
2. Development of teachers’ skills: In Cycle 1 (workshops and supervision), teachers showed improved knowledge and understanding and were better able to apply tools for analysis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. In Cycle 2 (study visits and knowledge sharing), teachers were able to effectively apply best practices in accordance with their school contexts.
3. Evaluation results: After the development, teachers demonstrated significantly improved and sustained knowledge, understanding, and operational skills. Consequently, school operations became more systematic, leading to more effective reduction of student dropout. In conclusion, teacher development through workshops, supervision, and study visits effectively enhanced the implementation of student dropout prevention and intervention.
