Language Techniques to Convey the Fear in Horror Cartoons from the Application Webtoon

Abstract

The large amount of access to the internet at the present lets people read cartoon in the application form more. The fear in horror cartoons is interesting in the sense that humans will react naturally when they fear. The act will drive them to survive and push them to the right way which can develop humans to develop the society.

This research aims to studies the content of the fear and the language techniques. The data were collected from the horror cartoons in the application called ‘WEBTOON’. The period of the collection was from 1st January 2015 to 31st December 2017. There were the 5 most favourite stories from the readers including 1. ‘Bastard’ 2. Torn Nee Rongrian Khong Rao (Our School Now) 3. Rueanglao Chark Winyan (Stories from spirits) 4. Sinsin’s House Baan Nee Phee Mai Lorn (This house is not haunting) and 5. Rongroi Chark Muetue (Clues from Cellphone). The researcher analyzed the data by using ‘Content Analysis’ and studying ‘Language Techniques’

The result of the research found that there are 5 types of fear. The most found type used by authors is the fear of oneself and truth, followed by the fear of unknown and intangible things, the fear of other people, the fear of animals and insects orderly. Language techniques are verbal and nonverbal languages. The verbal language technique to convey the fear is included with the usage of words, text and figures of speech. Those convey the meaning and the depth of emotions in order to let readers picture the image more clearly. The nonverbal language technique to convey the fear is included with, from the most used technique orderly, the usage of facial expressions, gestures, colors, delineation and font sizes. Those techniques helped to strongly emphasize the meaning and the characters’ feelings. The fear in the horror cartoons could be found in everyday life so it reflects the life of humans in the expression of fear through both verbal and nonverbal languages as explained in this research.
