ASEAN Music Knowledge in Thailand: A Compilation and Synthesis

Abstract

 This research aimed to explore, compile, and synthesize the ASEAN music knowledge of Thailand from textbooks, research papers, thesis, and journal articles of Thai academics. The study results found that there were 109 contents on ASEAN Music Knowledge which document types can classify as 18 textbooks, 11 research papers, 36 thesis, and 44 journal articles. Furthermore,  they can be classified by countries such as Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar, located on the mainland; Thailand borders. The top three countries were the most studied findings. The countries with a few amount of music and cultural education were the countries in the south or the island countries as follows: the Lao People's Democratic Republic has 39 items, the Kingdom of Cambodia has 16 items, the Republic of the Union of Myanmar has 15 items, Malaysia has eight items, the Socialist Republic of Vietnam has seven items, Singapore has five items, the Republic of the Philippines has three items, the Republic of Indonesia has one item, Negara Brunei Daruz Salam has one item and ASEAN music in total 14 items. The content synthesis results found that music elements have been studied: Music Education, Music Institute Management, Ethnomusicology, Musician, Band, Music and Politics, Ritual music, Music and Performance, historical development, and music change. Some issues have not been studied, such as popular music, the music industry, and music from the criticized concept study. The discovery of this content synthesis can lead to promoting research on scarcity issues to support widespread dissemination.
