Developing The Online Multidimensional Computerized Adaptive Testing Program for Assessing Teacher Burnout

This research aimed to develop an online computer-adapted test program for assessing teacher burnout by applying the multidimensional item response theory. The item bank was developed based on the concept of Marshlash and Jackson, comprising three behavioral dimensions: 1) Emotional Exhaustion, 2) Depersonalization, and 3) Reduced Personal Accomplishment. The steps of developing a computer-adapted test program are as follows: (1) set the starting latent-trait value between −0.5 and +0.5 and randomly select as the first item one whose location (position) parameter falls within that range; (2) after each response, select the next item that provides the most information at the current estimated latent-trait position; (3) estimate teacher burnout using the expected a posteriori (EAP) method; and (4) terminate the test when either the standard error of the latent-trait estimate is ≤ 0.3 or the item bank is exhausted.
The results revealed that the online multidimensional computerized adaptive testing program for assessing teacher burnout can be accessed via the website www.atb-mcat.com. Based on expert judgment, the program was deemed appropriate, acceptable, and it received highly positive feedback from teachers who used it.
