Geographical Analysis: Nanning, a City of Remarkable Development
Keywords:
Nanning, Geography, DevelopmentAbstract
This article aimed to examine the causes of Nanning’s remarkable development and identify the factors that have contributed to its transformation into the notable city it is today. It employs tourism geography, transport geography, globalization theory, core–periphery theory, and the concept of gateway cities as analytical frameworks. The analysis revealed that Nanning has systematically and efficiently capitalized on its strategic location as a border city connecting it with the ASEAN region by developing comprehensive transportation networks throughout the area. The city has reduced intercity travel times through robust physical infrastructure, thereby improving accessibility and supporting tourism development. Nanning has shifted from a passive border town to a proactive gateway city, enhancing its competitive position.
Furthermore, Nanning’s development is grounded in high-quality research and education: specialized institutions have been established to address urban and national development needs. The city has implemented international student exchange policies at the university level and fostered academic cooperation networks between China and ASEAN countries, producing significant economic and social effects. These exchanges enable students to learn about society, culture, and politics and often lead to future business collaborations after graduation. This represents a significant turning point and an innovative approach to the city’s development.
