Abstract

This research aimed to examine the relationships among variables and to develop a multiple regression equation to predict problematic social media use among undergraduate students at Burapha University, Bangsaen Campus. The population comprised 24,671 undergraduate students. Based on the caculation by using G*Power, a sample size of 119 students was determined. Data were obtained through multistage random sampling. The research instrument was an online questionnaire measuring factors associated with problematic social media use. The data was analyzed using means, standard deviations, correlation coefficients, and multiple regression analysis.

The results showed that depression (X1), loneliness (X2), and fear of missing out (FOMO) (X3) were positively and significantly correlated with problematic social media use at the .05 significance level. Depression, loneliness, and FOMO together significantly predicted problematic social media use at the .05 level and explained 35.7% of the variance. The predictive equation can be formulated as follows:

The equation in the form of raw scores:

Y’ = 1.301 + .190(X1) + .221(X2) + .311(X3)

The equation in the form of standard scores:

Zy’ = .183(ZX1) + .263(ZX2) + .376(ZX3).
