Abstract

The purposes of this study were: (1) to examine the learning management process based on discussions of contemporary political issues; and (2) to analyze the development of citizenship skills among first-year social studies students at Valaya Alongkorn Rajabhat University under the Royal Patronage, following the implementation of this discussion-based learning process. This research employed a qualitative case study design. The key informants consisted of 22 first-year social studies students enrolled in the Thai Politics and Government course during the first semester of the 2024 academic year. The research instruments included participant observation, open-ended questions, semi-structured interviews, and student reflective journals. Data were analyzed using content analysis and thematic analysis.

The research findings revealed that: 1) The learning management process based on discussions of contemporary political issues focused on creating a safe space for exchanging perspectives, utilizing contemporary political issues as a foundation for discussion, and providing opportunities for learners to connect their experiences with real-world social and political situations through six main discussion topics. 2) The development of learners' citizenship skills showed significant progress in four dimensions: (1) learners demonstrated increased interest and awareness of political issues; (2) learners become more confident in expressing their opinions and respecting diverse viewpoints; (3) learners exhibited development in critical thinking, information evaluation, and reasoned communication; and (4) learners developed a greater awareness of their roles, rights, and duties as citizens, while being able to apply the concepts from the discussions to their everyday contexts.
