Variations in Beethoven’s Piano Repertoire: Performance and Analytical Notes

The creative research in performance practice-Variations in Beethoven’s Piano Repertoire: Performance and Analytical Notes-aim to analyze and to interpret Beethoven’s variation works. Furthermore, the research investigates an appropriate way to perform these works; Six Sets of Variations for Piano and Flute, Op. 105, Six Variations on an Original Theme for Piano in F major, Op. 34, and Seven Variations for Cello and Piano in E-flat Major on “Bei Männern, welche Liebe fühlen” from Mozart’s the Magic Flute, WoO 46. All of these selected works are variation forms whose genre or instrument types (piano, cello, and flute) and performance techniques are different. These works were also composed in different periods by using distinct raw materials. The research does not aim to provide compositional or music-theoretical analysis, but the analysis of performance practices. Therefore, the research describes the music in terms of interpretation, practice and planning, and ensemble. However, music-theoretical analysis is inevitable in some cases.
