Charcteristics of Maurice Ravel’s Le Tombeau De Couperin
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyse the characteristics of Le Tombeau de Couperin using Benward and White's methodology and to examine the Impressionist and neo-classic features in the piece. The consequences will be discussed in 7 topics: tonalities, chord progressions, cadences, melodic materials, meters and rhythms textures and musical structures. According to the research, Le Tombeau de Couperin is neo-classic but with Impressionist features. Using suite genre, as well as Baroque and Classic symmetry form structures are obviously the characteristics of neoclassicism. However, despite the traditional forms and functional harmonies found Impressionist features in the blurring of distinct tonalities, harmonies, cadences, and rhythms.
