Recite for Percussion Ensemble and Recitation

Abstract

Recite for Percussion Ensemble and Recitation was composed with the main purpose to create a piece of temporary classical music using unique characters of indefinite pitch percussion instruments to profoundly heighten the use of timbre, functions of percussion instruments in both theme and counter melody in music composition, and orchestration in ensemble positioning. For the melody part, a poem ‘Monglok – Mongrao’ by Tiwa, a freelance writer, was meaningfully chosen as a core concept of this piece for it deeply and philosophically concerns human culture and way of life. The structure was created from the use of syllables in Thai language presented in the poem, to be the main rhythmic idea which the phrases are formed from. The composition was focused around various techniques based on 20th century music styles such as irregular rhythm, metric modulation box notation, and extended techniques. The premier performance was done by a group of highly skilled Thai musicians and the record can be accessed via the internet.
