This academic article discusses interpretation and significant vocal techniques in Twelve Poems of Emily Dickinson by Aaron Copland (1900-1990), an American composer, set with poems by Emily Dickinson (1830-1886), an American poet. The set consists of 12 art songs for soprano and piano of which the singer must interpret and perform with advanced singing techniques in order to convey the performance with perfection. Lyrics set by Dickinson is the important factor in making the whole set of compositions more complicated and unique. The poems were set with free structure and materials. Five pieces from the whole set has been brought out for discussion on interpretation, important vocal techniques, and practicing process for singers to study and develop effective singing skills.
