“Hot Sticky Rice” for Jazz Orchestra: A Creative Research in Music Composition

Abstract

          A creative music research: Hot Sticky Rice for jazz orchestra was commissioned by Taipei Jazz Orchestra to perform on October 20, 2019 at Taichung Jazz Festival, Taiwan.  The research could be divided into two main issues, (1) preparation and planning of musical materials and (2) compositional process.  The result of the research showed that Taiwanese folk song was used as a material for composition combining with jazz concepts.  The main harmonic materials used are upper-structure triads and slash chords.  These concepts were also used during the improvisation sections.  Furthermore, the even sixteenth-note, non-repetitive, linear, and Afro-Cuban rhythms were used to convey various cultural groups in Taiwan.
