Adaptation of Tai Yai Music Culture in Northern Thailand

Abstract

       The purpose of the current study was to investigate the adaptation of Tai Yai music cultures in Northern Thailand in terms of 1. External adaptation and 2. Form adaptation encompassed five factors consisting of: 2.1 Instruments, 2.2 Band Formation, 2.3 Sound System 2.4 Songs, and 2.5 Social Roles. The study was conducted in a qualitative approach, and the data were collected by document analysis, observation, and interview. The informants were experts in Tai Yai music, music artists, and audients. The data were analyzed by descriptive analysis method.
        The results of the study were as follows. In terms of musical form, Tai Yai people adopted other musical cultures in their traditional performances. The C Major was used as the main tune of the play. Myanmar-originated songs were mixed into the Tai Yai traditional music. In terms of social role, with the influence of government policy, Tai Yai music performances are presented as a demonstration of a culture to support tourism.
