Abstract

This article presents a study and analysis of Joseph Haydn's Trumpet Concerto in E-flat Major. The concerto is an influential piece for trumpet, as it is the first piece of music written after the development of a keyed trumpet which allowed the instrument to be able to play in chromatic scale instead of solely harmonic series. This article includes a study of the composer’s biography, the history of the concerto, an analysis of different performing techniques and approaches for composing a cadenza that can be used for appropriate interpretation and performance of the concerto. This study and analysis are part of a Master’s thesis in trumpet performance by Wasawat Phayakkakul.
