Abstract

Dasa Jataka, the story of the ten previous lives of the Buddha, had been commonly seen in mural paintings in central Thailand in the past. In the northeastern region (Isan), however, it was not until the 25th Buddhist century that mural paintings of Dasa Jataka appeared in its upper part with a mixture of local and traditional central mural painting styles and presentation methods. Presumably initiated by Luang Chan Akson group of local artists, the painting was created for the first time at Wat Hua Wiang Rangsi in Nakhon Phanom Province. The murals at Wat Hua Wian Rangsi thus served as a model for other temples in the area, such as Wat Phuttha Sima, Amphur That Phanom, Nakhon     Phanom Province; Wat Latthikawan, Amphur Wan Yai, Mukdahan    Province; and Wat Si Khun Muang, Ampur Chiang Khan, Loei Province.
