Abstract
This article points out some critical issues on the history and transformation of Thai traditional music and performance to Lakorn Rong, a post - Siamese musical plays, under changing political and socio - cultural conditions. The study of Chan Chaokha, a popular musical plays composed by Pranboon shows a compromise between tradition and modernity. While performance was obviously westernized, music still maintained some traditional characteristics, making a compromise by using traditional songs with western music. Lakorn Rong is therefore a product of post - Siamese culture, serving as the mainspring of Thai vocalization such as Phleng Luk thung, or Thai country music, and Phleng Luk krung, or Thai city music.
