The elderly face physical, mental and social decline. As a result, majority of the old age had mental health problem, particularly the incidence of depression. Depression is due to the deterioration of the physical problem. The old age with depression usually feel uncomfortable that affect to the mental health status of the elderly. The old age must dependence and autonomy in their children. Therefore, these cause them depressed easily. Depression is a common health problem in the elderly population, but it is often overlooked and misunderstood due to aging changes. It may affect the physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs leading to a decrease in the quality of life. In addition, it may be accompanied by a high risk of suicide and increase the mortality in the elderly. To ensure that elderly receive comprehensive and effective care, healthcare professionals need to apply current knowledge and empirical evidence about causes and factors associated with elderly depression that include models of treatment. Professional nurses can play an important role in taking care of elderly with depression. The objectives of nursing care for elderly with depression is to perform suitable screening and diagnosis, provide holistic care to reduce the risk of self-harm, and promote modification of negative thoughts, emotions, and behaviors in a positive and appropriate directions so they may live with their families and be part of the community.
