Abstract

The objective of this research is to study the television script adaptation techniques on the novel series “Sabphusa,” “Roymai,” “Qi Pao,” and “Kol-kimono” by Pongsakorn and provide a body of knowledge on the adaptation of novels into television scripts. This qualitative research, the data are collected from the interview of four television scriptwriters: Mr. Yingyos Panya, Ms.Tanawadee Sathityuttakan, Ms. Nantawan Rungwongpanich, and Mr. Supahcai Sitthi-ampornphan, and the analysis of television scripts based on four novels. The results found that the television script adaption techniques based on the novel series “Clothes” by Pongsakorn begins when the
scriptwriters read the novel thoroughly, select the scene that can be used in the television drama, and eliminate some parts of the novel which are unable to be broadcasted. The scriptwriters need to obtain permission from the author and producer before adapting the structure/details of a novel in order to make it appropriate to the television production. The next steps of the script adaptation process are the creation of new scenes, the analysis of important characters, the research on
costumes, the creation of ghost characters to be more interesting, and the location scouting. The scriptwriters have to create a treatment before start writing a script for television drama production. The narrative storytelling also includes the flashback and the transition between past and present. The narration of all four novels are weighted differently according to how much the past time scene influences the present time scene and the flashback narrative will interrupt the story.
