Increasing of Productivity in Product Handling Processes : A Case Study of ABC Company Ltd.

Abstract

This research aimed to study the working processes in product handling to delivery. Also, it aimed to increase the work efficiency and reduce the work processes of product handling. Initially, the researchers studied the work processes of product handling by observing and inquiring of an experienced worker. According to the initial study, the researchers analyzed the problems by categorizing the type of tasks into three categories i.e. the pallet task, the box task and the long item task. The problem analysis method of work processes in product handling is through brainstorming and the Fish Bone Diagram. Three problems were found and the researchers tried improving the work processes with various theories and concepts. For the problem of waiting for product handling and the problem of searching for pallets to set down products for warehouse workers at the door shelter, the solution was ECRS, work easily and the Visual Control technique, which is to control work by using visual signals and to manage the utility space of product handling. For the problem of redundant work in the checking and scanning to register steps, the solution was ECRS, eliminating an unnecessary step.

          The research results came from a working experiment with new pallets and collecting time data after the experiment. The researcher collected time data for 10 examples and found the average, for comparison with a standard time before improving. The time allowance was 9% from the result of work improving steps. This decreased the total time of product handling for each type of task; the pallet task from 526.38 to 379.23 seconds, which can be counted in a percentile of 27.96, the box task from 935.70 to 639.95 seconds, which can be counted in a percentile of 31.61, and the long item task who's work process was not improved. As the pallet task and the box task were improved and all three tasks were related, it caused the time taken for the long item task to reduce from 769.17 to 519.27 seconds, which can be counted in a percentile of 32.49. Since the time of the pallet task was reduced, the whole product handling time was reduced as a result.
