Storytelling and Folk Wisdom in Palm sugar Packaging Development of Ban yang Subdistrict, Wat Bot, Phitsanulok

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to 1) study stories and folk wisdom about Palm sugar identity and 2) to developing packaging from local materials of Ban Yang Subdistrict, Wat Bot District, Phitsanulok. This research was research and development, which was conducted using participatory action research. The sample group consisted of 30 representatives of community leaders, entrepreneurs and consumer. The research instruments included a questionnaire, a structured interview and survey. Data were analyzed using content analysis. The results revealed  that 1) Storytelling and Folk Wisdom related to Palm sugar identity of Ban Yang Subdistrict, Wat Bot District, Phitsanulok consisted of narrations about the history of climbing sugar palm trees which was in accordance with the geographical features of the area. Sugar palm tree climbers have supernatural beliefs due to risk of accidents. Wisdom was classified into two types, namely, the wisdom of climbing sugar palm trees and the wisdom of making Palm sugar. 2) The developing packaging from local material by applying the product brand was derived from stories, folk wisdom and paintings related to palm sugar production process signifying the lifestyle and language of the people. Applying local wisdom of basketry which brings about beautiful, clean and attractive packaging.
