The Arts of Diction in Phayao’s Song Literature

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to analyze the distinctive features of the word choice and phrasing in Phayao’s songs and to synthesize the identity of Phayao through the word choice and phrasing in Phayao’s songs. In this study, 31 songs were examined and categorized into two types based on word choice and phrasing: Luk Krung (Thai Golden Oldies) and
Luk Thung (Thai Country Music) songs. The contents of these songs were then analyzed
and synthesized, and the findings were presented in a descriptive analytical format.  The study found that, in terms of the distinctive features of word choice and phrasing, the authors employed six literary techniques: emotive words and expressions, repetition of words and meanings, compound words, local dialect words (Kam Mueang), alliteration, and synonyms. Regarding the development of Phayao identity through word choice and phrasing, four aspects were identified: history and the sacred, way of life deeply influenced by significant geographical locations, nature of Phayao, and the identity of the people of Phayao. This study demonstrates that in addition to being a source of entertainment, Phayao’s songs are also an aesthetic medium that documents cultural foundations and establishes lasting recognition of Phayao identity.
