Abstract

Nowadays, science and technology have become an essential part of human life, especially augmented reality (AR), which is a technology that combines multimedia with the real world. Moreover, the researchers found that the science lesson content is pretty tricky and invisible. Accordingly, the researchers used AR as a powerful tool to facilitate learning and visualization. The purpose of this study was to assess primary students' scientific understanding using an Open-Inquiry learning approach combined with mobile augmented reality. The experimental group in this study consisted of 39 fifth-grade students from the northeastern region of Thailand. None of the students had prior experience using AR applications for science learning. The researchers developed a mobile AR application to support students’ conceptual understanding of changes in the states of matter. The study employed a quasi-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design. Students’ conceptual understanding was assessed using a pretest and posttest, each comprising a single open-ended item covering six processes related to changes in the states of matter. The students’ responses were categorized into five levels. The results revealed a significant improvement from pretest to posttest. Therefore, integrating open-inquiry learning with mobile augmented reality effectively enhanced students’ scientific understanding.
