Assessment of Competency for Health Communication with the Elderly Among Village Health Volunteers in Wanorn Niwat District, Sakon Nakhon Province

Abstract
This mixed-methods research aimed to 1) study the needs for developing health communication competencies, 2) assess the health communication competencies among Village Health Volunteers (VHVs), and 3) examine the correlations among four competency dimensions in Wanorn Niwat District, Sakon Nakhon Province. The study consisted of two phases: Phase 1 involved qualitative focus group discussions with 28 key informants, and Phase 2 utilized a quantitative survey with 370 VHVs. The research instrument demonstrated a reliability of 0.964. Data were analyzed using percentage, mean, standard deviation, and Pearson's correlation coefficient. The results revealed that: 1) VHVs required development in simplifying medical jargon into local language and utilizing multimedia technology for effective communication; 2) The overall competency was at a high level. Motivation in communication received the highest mean score, followed by self-awareness, communication skills, and knowledge of the communication process, respectively; and 3) All four competency dimensions showed statistically significant positive correlations at the .01 level. It was recommended that public health agencies should implement practical workshops focusing on localizing medical terminology and promoting digital media tools to enhance health communication. Additionally, establishing a regular refresher training system is crucial for maintaining and updating VHVs' competencies.
