บทคัดย่อ
การทำความเข้าใจชนชั้นทางสังคมโดยทั่วไปมักพิจารณาด้วยวิธีการเชิงประจักษ์ แต่ในความเป็นจริงชนชั้นถูกกำหนดจากเงื่อนไขเชิงวัตถุวิสัยและอัตวิสัย ในบทความนี้จึงนำเสนอแง่มุมเชิงทฤษฎีของนักวิชาการ 5 คน อันได้แก่ คาร์ล มาร์กซ์, แมกซ์ เวเบอร์, เอ็ดเวิร์ด พี ธอมป์สัน, เดเนียล เบลล์ และโดยเฉพาะปิแอร์ บูร์ดิเออ เพื่อให้เห็นมุมมองวิธีคิดที่มีต่อมโนทัศน์ชนชั้นทางสังคมของนักวิชาการแต่ละคน โดยคาร์ล มาร์กซ์ให้ความสำคัญกับปัจจัยเชิงโครงสร้างโดยเฉพาะปัจจัยการผลิตและวิถีการผลิตในการกำหนดชนชั้น แมกซ์ เวเบอร์ให้ความสำคัญกับปัจจัยทางเศรษฐกิจ กลุ่มสถานภาพ การเมือง โอกาสของชีวิต สถานการณ์ของชนชั้น และประสบการณ์ในการอธิบายชนชั้นและการจัดลำดับชั้นทางสังคม เอ็ดเวิร์ด พี ธอมป์สัน ศึกษาชนชั้นแรงงานในประเทศอังกฤษและให้ความสำคัญกับประวัติศาสตร์โดยกล่าวว่า ชนชั้นไม่ได้แยกต่างหากจากแต่เกิดในความสัมพันธ์ของมนุษย์และในความสัมพันธ์เชิงประวัติศาสตร์ เดเนียล เบลล์ ชี้ให้เห็นถึงชนชั้นใหม่ในสังคมหลังอุตสาหกรรมว่าเกิดจากเงื่อนไขของสังคมที่เปลี่ยนแปลงไปโดยให้ความสำคัญกับการศึกษา และปิแอร์ บูร์ดิเออ ที่เสนอการศึกษาชนชั้นด้วยการพิจารณาชนชั้นในเชิงภววิทยา ญาณวิทยา และวิธีวิทยา และเสนอว่าพื้นที่ทางสังคมคือสิ่งที่ทำให้เราเห็นชนชั้นในความเป็นจริง
