Senses of self and hometown of the poets who appear in Autobiographical Poetry Winning SEA Write Award

Abstract
This article aims to study the poets’ sense of self and hometown through autobiographical poetry that received the SEA Write Award. The scope of the study includes the poems “The Lost Leaves” (1989), “Ma Kan Kluay” (1995), “Maenam Ruam Luek” (2004), “The World in My Eyes” (2007), and “On the Way Home” (2019). The results of the study show that the poets’ sense of self has common characteristics, presented through three periods of their lives: 1. The period of their youth, 2. The period of their struggle/search for something better, and 3. The period of their journey home. All of the poets were forced to leave their hometowns to enter the city and were disappointed by the place. Therefore, they returned to their hometowns in terms of both their thoughts and reality to heal themselves. Each poem shows their life goals, search processes, and receives similar answers.
