Astrology and the Creation of a Novel Titled 'Rurk-Sanghan' of Wanwat

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to study the influence of astrology on the creation of a novel titled 'Rurk-Sanghan' of Wanwat and to classify and group astrological data in fiction, as well as to analyze Thai society through the use of astrology in creating novels. The scope of the study is to use the sources from Wanwat's novel titled ‘Rurk-Sanghan’, published in the 10th edition of the book in September 2019, by the publisher Na Banwannakam, totaling two Volumes, which are ‘Rurk-Sanghan’ Volume I and ‘Rurk-Sanghan’ Volume II. In this regard, the researchers only analyze astrological data that affects the process. The result of the research shows that  ‘Rurk-Sanghan’ has  used three parts of astrology which are calculation, forecasting and ritual part for creating the novel, in which the astrology in the novel influences the creation of novel elements such as plot, theme, characters, scenes and dialogue. Using astrology as an important principle in creating novels, reflects the social problems such as gender inequality, sexual harassment problems, human lust, and also reflects the importance of astrology as an anchor for the human mind. The novel also shows the importance of folklore related to rituals, beliefs of the Thai people on the auspicious time and stars to create novels. More importantly, Wanwat's novels (Rurk-Sanghan) can completely act as a reflection of current Thai society through the dimension of the relationship between astrology and literature.
