Conceptual Metaphor related to “Bunkhun” in Thai

Abstract
This article aims to study the metaphorical expression which reflects the concept of “Bunkhun” (favor) in Thai. The data was collected from the Thai National Corpus of the Department of Linguistics, Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University by using the keyword “Bunkhun”. A total of 403 messages were found with metaphorical expressions related to “Bunkhun”. The study found that there are three concepts about “Bunkhun” in Thai which are [BUNKHUN IS AN OBJECT], [BUNKHUN IS DEBT], and [BUNKHUN IS HUMAN]. The concepts found reflect how humans understand “Bunkhun” which is an abstract idea that is drawn from human physical experience and understanding. Additionally, the concepts of “Bunkhun” found also reflect some aspects of social interaction among Thai people.
