When Did Traibhumikatha Come Into Being?: Dating Traibhumikatha Using the Polyfunctional Word /thîː/

Abstract
This research aims to date the Phra Mahachuay of Wat Paknam’s version of Traibhumikatha, which is generally believed to be a Sukhothai-era text. We analyze the pattern of the occurrence of the word /thîː/ in the Traibhumikatha text by comparing it with reference texts whose dates are known. The results are then confirmed using the k-Nearest Neighbors classification algorithm. The results show that the word /thîː/ appears in the Traibhumikatha text as a relative clause marker, complementizer, and nominalizer. These functions are not found in reference texts from the Sukhothai period, but have been widely attested in texts since 2301 B.E. onwards. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Phra Mahachuay of Wat Paknam’s version of Traibhumikatha, which contains all three functions, was written during the late Ayutthaya to early Rattanakosin periods. This study contributes to the debate on the age of the Traibhumikatha and shows that polyfunctional words can be used effectively to date texts.
