On Antagonist: Attitude of Sanskrit Literary Theorists

Abstract
The objective of this article is to study the concept of antagonists in Sanskrit poetics and their commentaries as it is an area left unexplored. The findings show that antagonists are prevalent in Sanskrit literatures but do not play significant roles in Sanskrit poetics, as can be seen from the word Pratināyaka, which reflects taking the protagonist or Nāyaka as a principal character. The notion about sequence of narration must be noted; i.e., in the storyline antagonist’s appearance should come after protagonist’s. Also the content of the antagonist in textbooks is either rare or mentioned stereotypically. Besides, the other reason, rather important, is the Sanskrit antagonist has nothing to do with the love sentiment (śṛṅgāra rasa). Therefore it can be concluded that antagonist is insignificant in Sanskrit poetics.
