Development of KWDL Learning Management Integrated with Skill Practice in the Fractions Learning Unit for Grade 3 Students

Abstract

        This study aimed to develop a learning management model using the KWDL technique integrated with a skill-based exercise set in the learning unit on fractions for Grade 3 students, ensuring effectiveness based on the 70/70 criterion. It also aimed to compare students’ learning achievement before and after the learning management, and to assess their mathematical problem-solving abilities against the 70 percent benchmark. The sample group consisted of 15 Grade 3 students from Ban Laluengphiman School, Dan Khun Thot District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province, selected through cluster sampling. The research instruments included the learning management plan, the skill exercise set, and a mathematics achievement test. Data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, and t-test.

The research of this research was as follows:

1. The learning management plan using the KWDL technique with the skill exercise set in the fractions unit was effective, achieving an efficiency value (E1/E2) of 77.45/74.35, which met the predetermined criterion. This indicates that the plan successfully supported students’ engagement and learning both during and after the instruction.
2. The use of the KWDL technique with the skill exercise set significantly improved students’ post-instruction learning achievement compared to their pre-instruction scores at the .05 level of significance. This reflects the positive impact of the participatory and systematic approach of the KWDL model on students’ understanding.
3. Students’ mathematical problem-solving abilities after instruction exceeded the 70 percent benchmark with statistical significance at the .05 level. The results from the analytical and application-based assessment criteria indicate that the KWDL technique integrated with the skill exercise set is an effective learning approach that enhances students’ key competencies in solving mathematical problems.
