Development of Catathea Wood Basketry Product Decorated with Burning Techniques for Satree Chaobhubha’s Community Enterprise Chanthaburi

Abstract

This research aimed to develop Catathea wood product prototypes of Satree Chaobhubha’s Community Enterprise, of which textures were decorated by burning techniques in order to create color shades and patterns for wickerwork products different from the traditional ones that used only natural colors from Catathea wood. The techniques were divided into 2, i.e., pyrography for drawing patterns on the woven Catathea wood sheets and Shou Sugi Ban technique to color Catathea wood strips for weaving. In the meantime, the researcher also searched for product development guidelines. The data obtained by questionnaire completion from 357 consumers about their needs for Catathea wood wickerwork in Chanthaburi Province was brought for analysis and sketching Catathea wood products. The textures of the sketches were decorated by both burning techniques; each technique for 2 product categories, i.e., 1) basket and 2) placemat. Each category included 4 sketches. The experts used the assessment form to select the ones with the highest scores to create prototypes. The results of Catathea wood wickerwork products using pyrography revealed that Sketch 3 in the basket category had the highest score (=4.14), and Sketch 3 in the placemat category had the highest score (=4.22). The results of Catathea wood wickerwork products using Shou Sugi Ban technique revealed that Sketch 1 in the basket category had the highest score (=4.06), and Sketch 3 in the placemat category had the highest score (=3.95)
