A Study and Development of Cultural Graphic Patterns to Create Identity in Chanthaburi Province

Abstract

The objectives of the study and development of cultural graphic patterns to create the identity of Chanthaburi Province were as follows: 1) to study the culture of Chanthaburi Province, and 2) to design cultural graphic patterns in Chanthaburi Province. The research methods were documents, books, related research interviews with cultural stakeholders, focus group discussions, model assessments from cultural experts, and graphic design. The population used in the research was the tourists in Chanthaburi province. The sample group consisted of 100 tourists using accidental sampling.

           The results of the research revealed that the design guidelines for cultural patterns in Chanthaburi Province had an important identity: 1) gemstones consisting of red sapphire, blue sapphire, and topaz, 2) the rabbit which is the symbolic animal of Chanthaburi Province, 3) Fruit in Chanthaburi Province is a prosperous province. The most famous fruit is the durian named Monthong, which is an economic fruit, and 4) Chanthaboon mats have been famous handicrafts of the province for a long time. The cultural graphic patterns were recognized as the most, namely Chanthaboon patterns, and then created a total of 10 drafts consisting of the identity of Chanthaburi province selecting only 3 designs by experts. After that, it was taken to tourists to evaluate satisfaction with the cultural graphic pattern draft. It was found that the first one was type 1 named Prakai Mat. The overall average satisfaction with the cultural graphic pattern drafts was 4.38 (S.D.= 0.71). The second one was type 3 named Kratai Lakchan. The overall average satisfaction with the cultural graphic pattern drafts was 4.24 (S.D.= 0.79). The third one was type 2 named Anyaluk, with the overall average satisfaction with the cultural graphic pattern drafts was 3.78 (S.D.= 0.93).
