New Shoots on Old Roots: Crafting A Contemporary Brand from Indigenous Craftsmanship
Keywords:
Cultural Capital, Craftsmanship, Contemporary Brand Identity, Indigenous Wisdom, Local IdentityAbstract
Indigenous crafts represent a form of cultural capital that often serves as a source of inspiration for designers seeking to express local and traditional identities. Recognizing the value of indigenous crafts beyond their aesthetic or stylistic qualities allows for a deeper exploration of indigenous wisdom, philosophy, and local beliefs-elements that embody the cultural roots embedded in traditional craftsmanship. Integrating such wisdom with modern production technologies, sustainable materials, and contemporary design concepts leads to the creation of innovative products infused with a sense of cultural heritage, while also connecting traditional culture with modern lifestyles. This integration not only produces tangible products but also conveys meaningful experiences that foster emotional engagement with brands and become part of consumers’ daily lives.
Studying folk crafts as a source of conceptual capital for developing contemporary brand identities thus offers a new approach to cultural sustainability-revitalizing traditional heritage in ways that remain relevant in modern society. This article examines brands that have successfully constructed distinctive identities through the fusion of local craft knowledge and innovative design. It provides a comparative analysis of how traditional crafts-often perceived as outdated-can be reinterpreted through contemporary branding strategies. The study explores multiple dimensions, including conceptual approaches, technological adaptation, functionality, social and environmental considerations, to identify key strategies for developing and communicating contemporary brand identities that resonate with today’s social context and target audiences.
