Gratitude and Ethical Value in Theravada Buddhism
Main Article Content
Abstract
The objective of this article is to investigate and analyze gratitude (kataññū) and its ethical value within Theravada Buddhism, utilizing relevant documents and research. The findings indicate that, within Theravada Buddhism, gratitude (the recognition of beneficence) is established as a fundamental ethical principle. The study categorizes gratitude into two primary dimensions: Gratitude as a Virtue (Dhamma): Considered at the individual level, it is regarded as a sublime characteristic of the wise, known as the Sattapurisa (Good Person), which encompasses kataññū (knowing the debt of gratitude) and katavedī (repaying the debt of gratitude). This virtue is manifested in exemplary noble individuals (Ariya-puggala) such as the Bodhisattas and Arahants . The practice of gratitude thus serves as a means for mental development and the promotion of moral integrity. Gratitude as an Ethic (Cariyā): Considered at the social level, it involves the practice of reciprocating benevolence towards one another. This is viewed through social norms and doctrines, such as the Six Directions (Disa), which stipulate the mutual duties of children and parents. This principle of practice helps establish ethical relationships and contributes to social harmony and peace. The ethical value within Theravada Buddhism is examined through three components: Cetanā (Intention): The motivation, whether wholesome or unwholesome, where Kusala (skillful action) must be accompanied by non-greed (Alobha), non-hatred (Adosa), and non-delusion (Amoha). Kamma (Action): The deed based on either Right View (Sammā-diṭṭhi) or Wrong View (Micchā-diṭṭhi). Kamma-phala (Consequence of Action): Leading to a happy destiny (Sugati) or a woeful destiny (Duggati). Consequently, the role of gratitude possesses value at two levels: at the individual level, it is the foundation of virtue for the enhancement of mental quality; and at the social level, it is a principle of practice that sustains society by fostering moral relationships. Therefore, the correct practice of gratitude (Sammā-diṭṭhi) is a pathway towards the elevation of individual life and society as a whole.
