The Interior design to promote local identity of Wiset Chai Chan District, Ang Thong Province

Abstract

          This research article aimed to study 1) explore the cultural identity and local wisdom of Wiset Chai Chan District, Ang Thong Province; 2) formulate interior design guidelines that reflect the identity of Wiset Chai Chan District; and 3) develop practical approaches for presenting local identity through interior design for real-world application. Adopting a qualitative research methodology, data collection tools comprised four main methods: 1) interviews, 2) focus group discussions, and 3) document analysis. The participants consisted of the District Chief of the Wiset Chai Chan District Office and citizens visiting the district office for public administrative services. Through qualitative data analysis, the gathered insights were utilized to establish a spatial identity by developing a relational framework connecting three core identities. These elements were integrated through a design translation process to create a physical prototype model for spatial development, ultimately allowing for the validation of the proposed practical design application. The findings indicate that; 1) There exists a cultural identity and local wisdom rooted in the relationship between people and the site; the site's identity comprises interconnected elements spanning physical, historical, social, cultural, and traditional knowledge dimensions. 2) The process involves translating this identity into physical elements and a contemporary design language by synthesizing three key dimensions: physical and ecological, historical and spiritual, and vernacular architectural. 3) Transforming a conventional administrative service area into a space of symbolic experience—integrating historical, ecological, and lifestyle values ​​with daily functional utility—accommodates citizens visiting the civil registration department while creating a renewed atmosphere for a government facility. Additionally, the interior design reflects cultural capital through furniture layout planning and the creation of distinctive furniture forms.
