Abstract
This paper aimed to demonstrate linguistic principles and Thai idioms translation and presented cultural understanding through Thai idioms translation strategies. The author has divided the content into five parts: 1) definition and nature of translation; 2) linguistic principles and translation; 3) linguistic issues such as semantic components and phraseology or multiword lexical unit related to Thai idioms; 4) translation of Thai idioms and cultural understanding; and 5) the use of Thai language translation strategies. The author reviewed literature related to language and linguistic principles, perspectives on the necessity of cultural knowledge, and the origins of idioms in Thai and foreign languages. The author also suggested five appropriate translation strategies for translating Thai idioms which will be useful to Thai translators.
