บทความนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาภาพของสตรีผ่านความสัมพันธ์ของตัวละครหญิงทั้งสามรุ่น คือคุณยาย แม่พัททู และลลิตาลูกสาวของแม่พัททู บทความนี้ศึกษาภาพลักษณ์ของสตรีในสามรุ่น ได้แก่ คุณยาย แม่พัททู และลลิตา ในเรื่องสั้น "My Mother Pattu" ของสารัส มานิคคัม โดยใช้แนวคิดเรื่อง "แม่อินเดีย" การศึกษาแสดงให้เห็นว่าสตรีเหล่านี้มีคุณลักษณะที่เชื่อมโยงกับทั้งเทพีศักติผู้เป็นตัวแทนของความเมตตาและเทพีสมาชนากาลีผู้เป็นตัวแทนของความชั่วร้าย ภาพลักษณ์ทั้งสองนี้สะท้อนถึงอุดมคติที่ซับซ้อนและขัดแย้งของ "แม่อินเดีย" ความเชื่อเรื่อง "แม่อินเดีย" ดั้งเดิม ซึ่งยังคงอยู่ในการรับรู้ของชาวทมิฬที่อพยพมายังมาเลเซีย ได้หล่อหลอมความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างบุคคลในครอบครัว และก่อให้เกิดความขัดแย้งภายในครอบครัว โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งระหว่างคุณยายและแม่พัททู อย่างไรก็ดี ลลิตาผู้เป็นหลานสาวเป็นตัวแทนของ "แม่อินเดีย" ยุคใหม่ ซึ่งเป็นดั่งแสงสว่างให้แก่สังคม ความเห็นอกเห็นใจและความสามารถในการประสานความเชื่อที่หลากหลายในชุมชนของเธอท้าทายแนวคิดที่ล้าสมัยว่าการมีลูกสาวนำมาซึ่งความเศร้าโศก ประเด็นที่สำคัญคือ เธอฟื้นฟูความสุขและกลายเป็นศูนย์กลางของชุมชนที่ผู้คนหลากหลายความเชื่ออยู่ร่วมกัน ซึ่งแสดงให้เห็นว่าสตรีสามารถดำเนินชีวิตอยู่ในสังคมที่หลากหลายได้แทนที่จะต้องถูกจำกัดจากบรรทัดฐานทางสังคมที่เข้มงวด
