The integration of Buddhist principles in explaining Lanna astrology beliefs

Abstract

This research article aimed to: 1) Study the history and development of beliefs in Lanna astrology; 2) Examine the integration of Buddhist principles (Buddhadhamma) in explaining astrological beliefs in Lanna society; and 3) Analyze the ways in which Lanna astrological beliefs are expressed in accordance with Buddhist perspectives. This study employed a qualitative research methodology, drawing upon documentary research and field data. Twenty key informants, selected through purposive sampling, were individuals with knowledge and expertise relevant to the research issues. Focus group discussions were also conducted. The collected data were then analyzed descriptively and interpreted through a Buddhist conceptual framework.

The research found that:

1. Beliefs in Lanna astrology are rooted in indigenous beliefs concerning spirits and supernatural powers, prior to the later influence of Brahmanism and Buddhism. Consequently, Lanna astrology developed as a syncretic system, comprising both astronomical calculation and symbolic interpretation connected to everyday life, such as the determination of auspicious times.
2. Regarding the integration of Buddhist principles (Buddhadhamma), it was found that Lanna society has reinterpreted the notion of destiny within the framework of kamma and conditionality (paccaya). Astrology is not regarded as an absolute determinant of human life, but rather as a means of reminding individuals to be mindful of their actions and to live with heedfulness (appamāda).
3. Concerning the expression of Lanna astrological beliefs in accordance with Buddhist perspectives, it was found that such beliefs are transmitted through Buddhist rituals under the framework of Buddhist morality. The body of knowledge reflects four dimensions: the transformation of faith (saddhā) so that it is grounded in wisdom (paññā); the explanation of life through the doctrine of kamma; the use of the Four Noble Truths (cattāri ariyasaccāni) as a means of self-reflection; and the promotion of heedfulness (appamāda), with astrology serving as a skillful means (kusalopāya) for cultivating mindfulness.
