Problem Condition of Learning Pali Language in the Department of Social Study Subject, Religion and Culture of Students: Case Study in Secondary Schools, Muang District, Chiang Rai Province

The objectives of this research were; 1) to study problem conditions and characteristics of learning Pali language in department of social study subject, religion and culture of students in secondary schools, Muang district, Chiang Rai and 2) province and to suggest the ways to improve and promote teaching and learning Pali language in department of social study subject, religion and culture of students in secondary schools. The research was qualitative and quantitative. The school for this research was secondary school Muang district, Chiang Rai province. The sample group was consisted of 333 lower secondary school students using a random sampling method by determining the proportions according to the school population and 9 teachers chosen specifically from department of social study subject, religion and culture. The research instruments were questionnaires and small group meeting. Data analysis was based on mean, content analysis and descriptive writing.
The result of this research as follows:
1. Some students had some problems to read Pali appearing in the text as well as to listen to Pali from communication of their teachers or other sources that students could find. The mean of their problems to understand Pali was 21.4-23.5 and some students had some problems to communicate, to read, to write, to speak and explain the meaning of Pali in the society properly.
2. The ways to improve and promote teaching and studying Pali in the department of the first department of religion, moral and ethics and department of social study subject, religion and culture for secondary school students emphasising teachers and students through the process of participating and learning together were 1) teachers had to adjust the method to explain for the students by analysis Pali vocabularies from the roots according to grammar and gave them examples 2) teachers had to use new methods appropriate to students such as encouraging students to connect events or news to the Buddha’s teaching for the good conclusion. 3) exhibitions for doctrines and the way to follow the Buddha’s doctrines should be held in the form of creative art for learning and 4) learning Pali and discuss it with scholars in Buddhism.
