The Development of 4th Grade Students’ English Pronunciation Capacity through the Phonics Instruction

The objectives of this study were: 1) to develop 4th grade students’ English pronunciation capacity through the phonics instruction so that they made a mean achievement score of 75% or better, and that 75% of the group passed the mean score criterion of 75% and 2) to develop 4th grade students’ learning achievement in English through the phonics instruction so that they made a mean achievement score of 75% or better, and that 75% of the group passed the mean criterion of 75%. The samples consisted of 37 fourth grade students in classroom No. 4/1 at Kalasin St. Joseph School, under The Private Education Promotion Board, The Kalasin Provincial Education Office. The students were randomly selected during the second semester of the 2021 academic year. Research instruments included 1) 8 lesson plans which took 16 instructional periods to finish, 2) a 60-item English Pronunciation Capacity Test and 3) a 20-item multiple-choice test on learning achievement in English. The statistic used for data analysis were mean, percentage, and standard deviation.
The research results were as follows:
1. The students made a mean achievement score of 52.37 or 87.29% of the full marks in English pronunciation capacity which clearly passed the prescribed criterion.
2. The students made a mean learning achievement score of 16.72 or 83.60% of the full marks in English which is in accordance with the prescribed criterion.
