Cultivating Moral Values of Children and Youth in the Three Southern Border Provinces to Create a Peaceful Society

This study aimed to: 1) develop moral value indicators and moral value cultivation activities based on Buddhist principles; 2) implement the activities and assess the moral value behaviors of children and youth in the three southern border provinces; and 3) propose a model of moral value cultivation activities. A mixed-methods research design was employed. The sample consisted of 112 children and youth selected through simple random sampling and divided into an experimental group and a control group, with 56 participants in each group. In addition, 23 key informants were purposively selected. The research instruments included a set of moral value cultivation activities, a moral value behavior assessment form, a behavioral observation form, and an interview form. Data were analyzed using the mean, standard deviation, paired-samples t-test, independent-samples t-test, and content analysis.
The findings revealed that:
1. The moral value indicators developed through the integration of the Threefold Training and the Threefold Admonition were classified into four groups, comprising a total of 63 indicators, and were further developed into four activities covering knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors.
2. The experimental group’s mean moral value behavior score increased from 3.96 to 4.23, showing a statistically significant difference at the .01 level, whereas no significant difference was found in the control group. In addition, the posttest score of the experimental group was significantly higher than that of the control group at the .05 level; and
3. The proposed activity model consisted of four phases: indicator development, activity development, behavioral assessment, and presentation of the activity model. The model connected Buddhist principles with moral values and peaceful coexistence in a multicultural society.
