A War of Memories and the Changing Notion of the Past of “Former Comrades” from 1977 to 2015 (B.E.2520s – 2550s)
Main Article Content
Abstract
This research examines Thai former comrades' memoirs written and published between 1979 - 2015 in order to identify changes in their thought of the past when they were "revolutionaries" taking refuge with the Communist Party of Thailand (CPT) in the jungle. Findings show gradual changes in their thought, from romantic memories of their living in the jungle in memoirs written between 1976 - 1979 to extremely negative notions in memoirs written between 1979 - 1992 within the context of conflicts between some comrades and the CPT’s leaders resulting in the dissociation from the revolution movement. From 1992 - 1997 their thought gradually turned positive and eventually reached the point where the past was accepted as highly valuable and meaningful experiences, as illustrated in memoirs written between 1997 - 2015. The change is due to political transformation to be more democratic, when communism is no longer a menace to Thai society, as well as to their age and socio - economic status after returning to the society and living an ordinary life.
