Aesthetics of Thai scents: The Case study of Traditional Thai Fragrances
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article is an anthropological study of the aesthetics of traditional Thai fragrances. Data was collected from documents as well as by interviewing experts in scent aesthetics, survey and observation. It was found that design business in Thailand has been focusing on and responding to the needs and feeling of customers through scent design. Many scents have been produced without Thai scent archetype or fixed template for blending scents. The prototypes of Thai scents are mostly from foreign countries or synthetic scents of local flowers. However, without understanding the artistic value of scent creation, the characteristics of Thai scents is quite cliché. In terms of art, since scent aesthetics cannot be easily measured by art standards, the research on scents has been conducted without the understanding of scent aesthetics. The authors propose that the aesthetics of Thai scents could be achieved only by linking Thai fragrances with cultural experiences, the outcome is the aesthetic experience. Further study of Thai scent aesthetics and the development of Thai scent archetype are suggested.
