Primary School Administrators’ Behavior and Service Quality of Primary School Libraries in Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan Provinces

Abstract

The purposes of this study were to; 1) survey primary school administrators’ behavior, 2) survey service quality performed by the school library providers; 3) examine the relationship between the school administrators’ behavior and the service quality of the primary school libraries, and 4) identify a behavioral model of primary school administrators affecting service quality of primary school libraries in Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan province. The study employed a mixed method of data collection. The quantitative data were collected with an online questionnaire, which 375 of them were returned from the sample teachers who had experience using school libraries, which then were analyzed for percentage, mean, standard deviation, and Canonical Correlation and Path Analysis. The qualitative data were drawn from an in-depth interview with 8 primary school administrators who were the key informants and a content analysis was utilized to support quantitative data. The research results were as the following:

  1. The administrative behaviors of the primary school administrators in Phetchaburi and Prachaup Khiri Khan province in 6 dimensions and overall was in a high level; ranging in descending order of means as the dimension of decision making, leadership, determining the goal, operation monitoring, motivation building, and communication respectively.
  1. The service quality of the primary school libraries in the two provinces in 5 dimensions and overall was in a high level; ranging in descending order of means as the dimension of service providers, service accountability, location and environment, learning material accessibility, and library physical features respectively.
  2. The school administrators’ behavior of leadership dimension in terms of creating vision and disseminating the vision and operational control dimensions in terms of instruments and abilities and skills had a positive relationship with the service quality of the libraries in the dimension of knowledge providing service and the dimension of accountability in terms of service providing and caring the library users (R = .741) with the significant level at 0.01.
  3. A model of primary school administrators’ behavior affecting the service quality of primary school libraries consists of emphasizing the leaderships which create and disseminate good vision to school staff, monitor library service providers’ operation by using the tools, and abilities and skills to treat library service providers using library science knowledge to provide the right services and care to library users affecting accountable service that will ultimately contribute to the service quality of the primary school libraries.
