A Bibliometric Study of Research Related to the Development of Digital Library

This study aimed to conduct a bibliometric analysis of research on digital library development indexed in the international SCOPUS database. The documents analyzed comprised research articles published between 2003 and 2025. The bibliometric analysis was performed using Bibliometrix and VOSviewer. The findings revealed that: (1) a total of 6,866 research articles met the selection criteria; (2) the three most prolific authors were Zhang Y (41 publications), Wang Y (38 publications), and Fox R (32 publications); (3) the three years with the highest publication output were 2022 (453 publications), 2023 (425 publications), and 2024 (420 publications); (4) the top three journals publishing the highest number of articles were The Electronic Library (243 publications), International Journal on Digital Libraries (171 publications), and Journal of Chemical Information and Modeling (157 publications); (5) the three leading institutions in terms of collaborative publications were the University of California (158 publications), “not specified” (116 publications), and Wuhan University (96 publications); (6) the three countries with the highest levels of international research collaboration were the United States (1,425 publications), China (631 publications), and India (351 publications); (7) regarding research development, the articles were classified into two major categories: (7.1) digital libraries and (7.2) articles; and (8) future research trends indicated an expansion of topic frontiers, including “human,” “virtual screening,” “libraries,” and “systematic review.” Therefore, greater emphasis should be placed on developmental research to examine emerging trends in digital library development in the future.
