Abstract

This quantitative research aimed to: 1) investigate the influence of teachers' media knowledge and understanding on student engagement, and 2) examine the influence of teachers' media knowledge and understanding on general learning outcomes. Data were collected from a purposive sample of 370 administrators and teachers from private schools specifically in the lower northeastern region. The data were analyzed using multiple regression analysis.

The findings indicate that the components of media literacy in terms of analytical skill, communication skill, evaluation skill and accessibility skill influenced significantly and simultaneously to students engagement at F = 180.64 (Sig .000), R2 = .67, Std. error = .22 and Durbin-Watson = 1.84. Moreover, five components of media literacy such as analytical skill, communication skill, evaluation skill, participative skill and accessibility skill influenced significantly and simultaneously to generic learning outcomes at   F = 92.29 (Sig .000), R2 = .56, Std. error = .23 and Durbin-Watson = 1.50. These findings suggest that teacher’s media literacy could foster students engagement and generic learning outcomes in private schools.
