Expedition Mode of Myanmar Workers in Thailand: A Case Study of Myanmar Workers in Samut Sakhon

Abstract

            This research aims to study Myanmar migrant workers’ attitudes, perceptions, and expedition modes of working in Thailand as well as effects related to their migrations. Research data were collected from Myanmar migrant workers and Thai entrepreneurs in Samut Sakhon Province by a mixed research methodology.  The research find four particular reasons for their migrating to work in Thailand: good job expectation, higher compensation, positive attitude towards working in Thailand, and lowering barriers to working in Thailand.  Generally, Myanmar workers expect to work short-term, averaging 0-5 years, due to three principal reasons: 1) poor career opportunities and social acceptance in Thailand, 2) chance of their naturalization into Thai is nearly impossible, 3) their family members remain living in Myanmar.  About 42 percent of the sample work with private companies and factories in the area.  About 9.3 run their own businesses which are legally prohibited.  About 57.2 percent have been in and out of the country for more than one time.  About 64.5 percent have no legal social security protection which infers illegal working status.  In addition, about 78.3 percent expect to work in Thailand after the establishment of AEC. Even though working on a short term basis is apparent, recurring migrations of Myanmar workers for working are increasing.  A typical Myanmar worker takes back money for their family and investment before returning to work once again.  This pattern continues until they and their families have a better quality of life, or a substantial change occurs in Myanmar.  Consequently, a labor shortage is minimally expected in the province.
