A Study on Readiness and Adaptability of Thai Truck and Trailer Companies for Entry in the ASEAN Economic Community

Abstract
Nowadays, the Thai government recognizes the importance of building the capacity of logistics businesses, especially truck and trailer. These businesses are increasingly playing an important role in international trade and investment. An effective logistics system reduces total costs and also improves the service level, including enhancing national competitiveness in preparation for entry into the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC). The objective of this research was to study the capability level of Thai truck and trailer companies, including assessing their readiness and adaptability to the AEC. A survey research of 245, and in-depth interview of 22 respondents were conducted. Data collected was systematically processed and analyzed by SPSS version 14.0.0. The results show that Thai transport firms have various low degrees of readiness and adjustability for entering the AEC. Most of them are SME and mostly have negative potential. On the other hand, logistics users will get the highest benefits for gaining higher responsiveness and reduced costs. This paper also provides recommendations on how Thai transport firms can effectively prepare and respond to AEC entry.
