Abstract

The purpose of this research was to study the cytogenetics of two Hampala species, H. dispar and
H. macrolepidota
, by preparing chromosomes from the kidney cells of 10 fish specimens. Stained by using conventional and Ag-NOR banding techniques. The results showed that both species had a diploid chromosome number of 50, the fundamental numbers (NF) were 108 and 92, and the karyotypes were arranged as follows: 8m+22sm+16a+4t and 10m+12sm+20a+8t, respectively. There were no differences in karyotypes between males and females in these two fish species. Ag-NOR staining was found in the regions adjacent to the telomere of the short arm of chromosome pair 9 and pair 21 in H. despair, and chromosome pair 8 and pair 12 in H. macrolepidota. This cytogenetic data shows the chromosomal variables of the fish studied within the same genus, which are closely related, and it can be used as basic biological knowledge that can be integrated with other knowledge in the fields of biology and evolution.
